Solo Exhibition: Vitruvius from Without

Solo Exhibition

Living Studio in Stadtgalerie Klagenfurt

Opening: 1 October 2024
Duration: 2 October - 10 November 2024

Daniel Hill presents the results of his five-month scholarship for photography and media art from the state of Carinthia and the city of Klagenfurt:

Within the framework of the artistic research project, BODY OF MERE BEING, Daniel explores the power dynamics between the body and the built environment, critiquing the historically male-dominated nature of architecture. During the residency in Klagenfurt, the project examined how Renaissance architecture used the male body as the ideal model, epitomized by the Vitruvian Man, linking the body to questions of gender and sexuality. Through photography, moving images, and archival research, the exhibition presents the initial results to challenge the notion of divine proportions and the centrality of the male body in design. Critical feminist architectural theories are explored, suggesting that architecture projects and inscribes the male body in cities, while other bodies are suppressed, with the male body metaphorically transforming into a life-giving form.
